Pharmaceutical and Vaccine Research Center
A philanthropic research and development entity deepening capability in the manufacturing of vaccines and health commodities across Eastern and Central Africa — and beyond, wherever the need is greatest.
The African Union target: 60% of vaccines used in Africa manufactured in Africa by 2040.
Africa should not have to ask permission to make its own medicine.
Welcome to the African Pharmaceutical Sovereignty Assessment Project. Our aim is straightforward: to help Africa move from importing most of its medicines and vaccines to making them here. The continent depends on supply chains it does not control, and every global disruption shows how exposed that leaves us.
We measure progress against a single target — 60% of the medicines and vaccines used in Africa manufactured in Africa by 2040. We track the whole value chain, not just finished products, including whether the continent can make its own active pharmaceutical ingredients and secure a steady supply of raw materials.
Manufacturing capacity is only half the problem. We also monitor how governments buy medicines and what they budget for them, asking whether procurement rules genuinely favor African-made products and whether national spending matches the urgency of the goal. Where policy stands in the way, we say so.
We ensure that strategic long-term planning matches the financial investments required to build a resilient, competitive, and highly regulated continental market.
Data on its own changes nothing. Every assessment therefore ends with practical recommendations that institutions can act on — clear steps for governments, regional bodies and manufacturers to raise local production. I invite you to read our findings, question them, and work with us.
